20 Years of the ALDEBURGH DOCUMENTARY FESTIVAL!

We celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the ALDEBURGH DOCUMENTARY FESTIVAL

from Friday 14th to Sunday 16th November 2014

with a very special programme featuring an enlightening, entertaining range of themes from wine-making and pro-democracy movements to coming-to-terms with moral duty. Along the way there are life-affirming personal stories of love and loss, the impact of ‘progress’ and of adversities overcome. Seven inspiring sessions illustrate the all-important common ground between local and global, political and human, individual and universal.

This year’s line-up boasts the World Premiere of A LIFE ILLUMINATED: NEVILLE PARRY, CINEMA PROJECTIONIST. The made-in-Suffolk film is a fascinating insight into one man’s lifelong love affair with the magic of the movies, and a window onto developments in the UK cinema industry over the last seven decades. It forms Part One of an insightful ‘Global Meets Local’ Double Feature.

Set in the Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan HAPPINESS complements the ‘Global Meets Local’ Evening as we get a beautifully poised look at the seduction and impact of technology, and the complicated and bittersweet effects of progress.

This year’s Opening Night brings you the British Premiere of NATURAL RESISTANCE in which we meet four Italian winegrowers who live a life we all dream of. These natural wine rebels offer a model of charmed and joyous resistance against the ‘New World Economic Order’.

The Closing Night Show features star musician and lyricist EDWYN COLLINS, widely known for his hit ‘A Girl Like You’, who sings live on stage after the screening of THE POSSIBILITIES ARE ENDLESS, an intimate and life-affirming tale of rediscovering music, life and love.

OSCAR-winner JOHN BATTSEK presents THE GREEN PRINCE, a truly extraordinary Israeli-Palestinian spy story about personal experience and coming-to-terms with responsibility and moral duty. Matters addressed in the film are certain to be revisited in a fabulous festival Debate THE HOLY LAND, chaired by WILLIAM SIEGHART.

LESSONS IN DISSENT is a vivid, kaleidoscopic portrait of a young generation of Hong Kong citizens committed to more democracy in this former British colony. Highly topical after Hong Kong’s recent ‘umbrella revolution’ the screening will be followed by a Q&A with director MATTHEW TORNE and Hong Kong activist CRYSTAL CHOW CHING.

ROGER GRAEF, acclaimed multi-award-winning writer, director and producer of more than 120 films receives the Aldeburgh Documentary Festival Lifetime Achievement Award for his 50 YEARS OF MAKING FILMS … AND THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE.

JOHN BATTSEK returns to the stage for unique Masterclass HOW TO WIN OSCARS WITH RIVETING STORIES: An Illustrated Conversation between JOHN BATTSEK and DIANA QUICK.

We are delighted that acclaimed journalists, authors and TV presenters LIBBY PURVES and PAUL HEINEY will present the weekend’s screenings and conduct question and answer sessions.

There will be introductions, discussions and debates, question and answer sessions, lots of informal exchange of opinion all through the ALDEBURGH DOCUMENTARY FESTIVAL’s 20th Anniversary weekend. Expect quite a few pleasant surprises too, with legendary Aldeburgh atmosphere and hospitality enabling close encounters with film-makers, movers and shakers.

Join us for what will be a wonderful weekend in beautiful Aldeburgh!
